RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

The after-effects of serious accidents and congenital or illness-related defects call for specialists with the ability to (re)create physical functions, and also an exceptional sense of form, plus great sensitivity towards the patient's state of mind. It is this versatility that has made plastic surgery the kind of discipline that is capable of correcting both form and function of the entire body exterior. It also explains why so-called beauty operations are not the only area of activity of plastic surgery. The inter-disciplinary training that is unique to this medical field and subsequent specialist activity is what makes a plastic surgeon competent in both Cosmetic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery, and also capable of combining the two fields with each other. The range of reconstructive procedures available covers everything from cleft palate correction to large-scale skin grafts following tumour removal for breast cancer patients.

Ever since the 1930s, Hand Surgery has developed into a separate discipline within Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. While in the early years it was primarily concerned with the treatment of infections, tumours and accident cases, hand surgery today involves surgical and non-surgical treatment of a range of conditions affecting the bones, nerves, tendons and muscles of the hand.

Burns Surgery, also a specialty area within Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, is only offered to some degree on our premises. Extensive, recent burns must be treated in a special burns unit with the appropriate infrastructure (e.g. in university clinics). For smaller, local and acute burns or the after-effects of burns and burn scars, we are happy to advise and treat you here at our Centre.
